Filling Car with Oil

Motor oil is an essential component to the health and well-being of your vehicle, and it’s important to now how to check it. Maintaining the proper amount keeps the parts of your engine well lubricated and running smoothly, preventing damage from friction. Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Check your owner’s manual first, as some newer vehicles have electronic oil monitors that don’t use the traditional dipstick.

If your vehicle does use a dipstick, follow these steps to check your oil manually:

  • Park your vehicle on level ground, turn off the engine, and allow it time to cool off
  • Open the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  • Remove the dipstick out of the engine and clean off any oil on the end.
  • Replace the dipstick into its tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.

On your dipstick there will be some markers to indicate of the oil is at the proper level. The top of the oil streak should be located in a crosshatched area or in between two marks; if the level is below that you will need to add additional oil.

Reference the owner’s manual so you purchase the proper oil grade, remove the oil filler cap, then add oil a little at a time until the dipstick indicates you’ve reached the ideal level.
