Premium vs. Regular Gas: What’s the Difference?

When you’re filling up, you’ve likely wondered about the difference between premium and regular gas. The service center at Kingdom Kia is here to help! We’ve compared the differences between premium vs. regular gasoline to help you determine what is best for your new vehicle.

What is Premium Gasoline?

Both premium gas and regular gas are very similar in composition. The major difference between the two is their octane rating. Premium gasoline has an octane level that is 90 or higher. Premium gas takes more pressure to ignite, but when it does, it burns with less waste. That means it leaves far less residue and may even offer better fuel efficiency.

What is Regular Unleaded Gasoline?

Regular unleaded gasoline is the most common automotive fuel there is, and is suitable for most vehicles driving on Springfield and Jefferson City roads. Regular fuel typically has an octane rating of 87.

The Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

What’s the difference between premium and regular gas? Take a look at what makes the small differences between the two actually quite substantial:

  • Octane Rating: Fuel with a higher octane rating requires more pressure to ignite. That means the higher the octane level, the lower the likelihood of engine knock. Also called pre-ignition, this occurrence is less common with premium gasoline.
  • Engine Suitability: Regular unleaded gas ignites more readily than premium gas, making it suited for naturally aspirated engines with lower compression ratios. Engines with high compression ratios or some kind of forced induction will typically require premium gasoline.
  • Price: Filling up with premium gas is considerably more expensive than getting regular gas in Fort Leonard Wood. It may be more expensive, but your engine may require it.

Before deciding whether premium vs. regular gas is right for you, keep the following tips in mind:

  • If your car does not require premium gas, using it will offer no discernable benefits.
  • If your vehicle requires premium gas, using regular gas will not always harm your vehicle when in a pinch. However, you may experience decreased performance, efficiency, and responsiveness. Of course, if premium fuel is recommended, you should absolutely use it when available.
  • Many turbocharged vehicles require premium fuel to run without causing damage, as low-octane fuel can cause premature ignition from the high pressure.
